This second collaboration with the Luberon International String Quartet Festival focuses on German and Austrian composers and the works they wrote in the 1820s and 1830s.
In response to this theme, we propose some original works by Beethoven for mandolin and keyboard, as well as several Lieder by Schubert arranged by the famous Austrian guitarist Johann Kaspar Mertz (1806-1856).
Two centuries later, Thomas Keck will develop a new work based on four Schubert Lieder for the ‘string quartet’ of the Ensemble C Barré, consisting of mandolin, guitar, harp and cymbalum.
This theme naturally led us to propose a residency at the festival for Birke Bertelsmeier, a German composer who is herself in residence at the Ensemble C Barré since 2019, whose Ratzfatz trio we will perform before creating a new work for quartet co-commissioned with the Festival. Her presence in this edition will also irrigate other programmes of other quartet groups with whom we are programmed.
