An infinite second is a poetic and musical response to Leopardi’s Infinito :

L’Infinito

Sempre caro mi fu quest’ermo colle,

E questa siepe, che da tanta parte

Of the ultimo orizzonte il guardo esclude.

Ma sedendo e mirando, interminato

Spazio di là da quella, e sovrumani

Silenzi, e profondissima quiete

Io nel pensier mi fingo, ove per poco

Il cor non si spaura. E come il vento

Odo stormir tra queste piante, io quello

Infinito silenzio a questa voce

You compare: and I sovien the eterno,

E le morte stagioni, e la presente

E viva, e ‘l suon di lei. Thus with this

Infinità s’annega il pensier mio:

E ‘l naufragar m’è dolce in questo mare.

A. Leopardi

The Infinite

Always it was dear to me this solitary hill

and this hedge that hides from view

so many parts of the extreme horizon.

But sitting and contemplating,

beyond it, in my thoughts I invent

unlimited spaces, superhuman silences

and a deep quietude; where it is not necessary

that the heart is not frightened.

And as I hear the wind

rustling in these foliages, I go comparing

this infinite silence to this voice:

in me come back the eternal,

and the dead seasons and the present one

that lives, and its sound. Thus,

in this immensity, my thought drowns:

and shipwreck is sweet to me in this sea.
